Perris Cycle Show and Poker Run

June 4th & 5th, 2005

By Bob Stark

The weekend started out with slightly hazy weather on Saturday for the Poker Run.  It soon gave way to bright sunshine and a phone call from President Tim saying he was in a traffic mess on the 91 freeway, but would soon be to the starting point.  It was a pleasant ride with no mishaps – just a detour in Banning due to a parade.  Tim even found some nice back roads in the hills above Yucaipa that he had never been on.

The run ended by 2 PM in downtown Perris with the trophies being awarded shortly thereafter.  Tim did well on his poker hand drawing, having his name called for presentation.  Our SoCal Chapter had seven (7) members present for the Poker Run (and 14 members present on Sunday for the show), so we also received the trophy for largest Club in attendance.  After receiving the trophies, Tim gave a short speech about our club.

At the conclusion of his speech, he was immediately served with an arrest warrant for riding a 101 Indian Scout and escorted to the jail house!  A short time later, Mark Larsen and Bob Stark decided to take pity on him and post his bail.  While walking to the jail, we found Tim walking toward us!  He said the marshal wasn’t watching him closely and he escaped.  We weren’t convinced, as we were sure he must have had a desperate shootout along with his jail break.  We escorted him back to his trusty Scout and bid him “bon voyage.”  As he headed back toward home, he made good with his getaway before the marshal could get his posse ready to come after him.

For those of you who did not attend, it was a festive weekend with games, rides, carnival, vendors, etc.  One event was Western-dressed cowboys enacting shootouts in the street, and arresting people upon request, putting them in a mock jail; Tim wasn’t really arrested for cause!

On Sunday, we had fourteen (14) of our chapter members who entered their cycles in the show.  Awards were taken home by Lloyd Whitworth, Bob Stark, Mark Larsen, Jerry Unis, Grace McKean, John Ambrosio, Jim Falk, Bill Harris and Cindy Parsons.  In addition to the class awards, there was a huge “People’s Choice” trophy for the most popular cycle in the show.  This was voted on by attendees, and to his great surprise, the trophy was awarded to Jerry Unis for his Red and Black 1947 Indian Chief.  Congratulations, Jerry!  The big problem is finding a shelf area with enough overhead to accommodate the huge 3 foot trophy!

All of those in attendance had a fun time; here’s hoping to see more of our members in attendance next year, but thanks to all who participated.
