New Years Day Ride

January 1, 2005

By Craig Dillmann

Some of the SoCal faithful gathered at Tim Graber’s house for a ride up the coast bright and early.  It was a good way to start the New Year!  The weather gave us a break and we hit no rain... The gang left Tim’s house and headed up the coast thru Costa Mesa... Huntington Beach... Seal Beach... Long Beach... and finally landing in San Pedro for a breakfast / lunch at Taxco mexican restaurant...  At the eatery I overheard Bill Harris’ girlfriend Cindy telling of how terrified she was riding over the Vincent Thomas bridge..  saying she was terrified of heights.. The gang found this especially amusing as Cindy is a flight attendant...go figure.

We headed back to Costa Mesa around 12:30 from the restaurant. People started peeling off as we worked our way back to Tim’s..  After a short stop at TJ Graber’s cool beach pad we wound up back at Tim’s..

After a Pacifica or three, Tim made the mistake of pulling out his Model T race car out of his trailer..  After giving Irma a gentlemanly stroll around the block, Ken King hopped in the coach and that’s when the trouble started.  Tim left his driveway with the look Hell Fire and leather.. Lovejoy, Hobo John. Irma and I were waiting to bid our goodbyes, 5 minutes no Tim, 10 minutes no Tim, 15 minutes, no Tim, no Ken, no nothing....

As we headed home 5 minutes into our return trip, home guess who’s stuck on the side of the road looking like the cat that swallowed the canary? None other than Tim and a bewildered looking Ken King! We hauled Tim back to his house and he towed the car home all the while muttering; I think I blew the motor...  I for the life of me can’t figure out what could of possibly happened.  I’m sure Tim was giving Ken a safe slow ride around the neighborhood and cautiously obeying all the traffic rules religiously as he always does...
