Santa Monica Mountains Run
August 3, 2003

 By Jim Falk

The weather was perfect for a Sunday ride in early August.  About a dozen riders met at Craig Dillman’s place in Chatsworth to embark on a combination of mountain  turns and coastal  breezes.  We proceeded westward toward Mulholland Highway, detouring on Old Topanga Canyon Road through the mountains toward the coast.  Marc Gallin joined us at the intersection with Coast Highway, and we proceeded northward through Malibu to Zuma Beach.  The weather was great and the traffic tolerable.

My mother joined us on this ride, gracing Erhard’s sidecar for the entire trip, as I had my solo bike out for the day.  She has recently moved to CA from Ohio after 86 years in the Midwest!  Aside from some sunburn, she survived the ride intact and enjoyed the scenery.  We stopped at our familiar restaurant in Zuma for lunch; everyone relaxed for a good meal before continuing north to Neptune’s.  Here we headed inland, back into the mountains, stopping at the famous Rock Store in Cornell.  The crowd was light this day, but we had arrived a bit later than the normal rush.  Tom Lovejoy drove Craig’s truck as a chaser; no major mishaps this day.

The final stage of the ride followed Mulholland Highway back to Woodland Hills, then eastward to Chatsworth for the return to Craig’s place.  In all, we covered over 80 miles of spectacular roads and beautiful scenery.  Thanks again, Craig, for hosting such an enjoyable ride on a Summer day.
